a life belt
A life belt put on sailor's corpse and neck, made of non-drowning material (lather or cork) sewed with a cloth, also pneumatic; keeps the wearer afloat and turns the unconscious ones on their backs, so that the mouth could stay above the water's surface; often equipped with signal lights and a whistle.
